School Meals Aid in Learning

Proper nutrition plays a vital role in a child’s ability to learn, grow, and thrive. For many underprivileged children in South Africa, a nutritious meal at school or an Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre may be the most important meal they receive during the day.

Hunger affects concentration, energy levels, memory, and overall academic performance. When children have access to regular, nutritious meals, they are better able to focus in class, participate in activities, and reach their full potential. School feeding programmes therefore serve as more than just a source of nourishment—they are an investment in education, development, and a brighter future.

Sadly, millions of children across South Africa continue to experience food insecurity and hunger. This makes community-driven initiatives and feeding schemes essential in supporting vulnerable children and families. Through the collective efforts of organisations, donors, and volunteers, many children are able to receive the nutrition they need to support healthy development and successful learning outcomes.

At the Institute for Islamic Services (IIS), we recognise the importance of combining education with care and nourishment. By supporting feeding initiatives and educational programmes, we strive to uplift children and provide them with opportunities to grow academically, physically, and spiritually.

Islam teaches us the importance of caring for those in need, particularly children. By helping to feed and support young learners, we contribute towards building stronger communities and empowering future generations.
