Empowering Change: Together We Can End Gender-Based Violence

From 25 November to 10 December, South Africa joins the world in observing the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children. This period serves as a reminder of our shared responsibility to stand together, speak out, and take meaningful action to end gender-based violence.
This year’s theme, “Empowering Change: Scaling Prevention, Promoting Positive Masculinities, and Ensuring Safe and Inclusive Spaces to End GBVF,” challenges all of us to move beyond awareness and become active participants in transforming our communities.

Empowering Change Starts with Us
Gender-based violence and femicide remain among South Africa’s most urgent and painful issues. Behind every statistic is a person, a survivor whose life and dignity matter deeply. Empowering change means ensuring that survivors are supported, that justice is accessible, and that our homes and communities become places of safety, not fear.
True empowerment requires more than awareness. It calls for consistent action: changing attitudes, promoting empathy, and building a culture of equality and respect. Every person has the power to contribute to this change by listening, supporting, and refusing to be silent in the face of violence

Promoting Positive Masculinities
A key focus of this year’s theme is the promotion of positive masculinity. It invites men and boys to reflect on what it truly means to be strong and respectful. Strength is not about control or dominance; it is about empathy, accountability, and courage.
When men take an active stand against gender-based violence, they help reshape harmful norms and model healthy, respectful relationships. By promoting positive masculinities, we nurture a society built on partnership, understanding, and equality.

Creating Safe and Inclusive Spaces
Every woman and child has the right to live in safety. Safe communities are not built overnight; they require awareness, compassion, and collective responsibility.
Creating safe and inclusive spaces means standing with survivors, ensuring justice is served, and addressing the discrimination and inequalities that leave so many vulnerable. A truly inclusive society protects everyone, regardless of gender, age, or background.

Scaling Prevention for a Future Without Violence
Preventing gender-based violence begins long before it happens. It starts with education, early intervention, and community dialogue. Teaching young people about respect, consent, and equality helps break cycles of abuse and builds a stronger foundation for the future.

When individuals, families, schools, and organizations work together, prevention becomes possible. Through collaboration, education, and commitment, we can create a lasting culture of peace and mutual respect.

Join the Movement
The 16 Days of Activism is more than a campaign it is a call for transformation. Ending gender-based violence is not the work of a few; it is the responsibility of all.
Let us commit to creating a South Africa where everyone can live with dignity, equality, and hope. Speak out. Support survivors. Challenge harmful behaviors. Empower changes not just for 16 days, but every day.
