Reverence and Conduct During the Sacred Months
Reverence and Conduct During the Sacred Months
The Sacred Months in Islam are not honoured merely because of historical events, but because Allah (swt) Himself has commanded special reverence and heightened moral conduct during them.
Allah clearly identifies these months in the Qur’an, reminding believers that time itself is part of His divine order:
“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah from the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them…”
(Surah At-Tawbah 9:36)
These words serve as both guidance and warning. During the Sacred Months, Muslims are called to be especially mindful of their actions—avoiding injustice, sin, and harm, while increasing acts of worship, charity, and self-discipline.
However, this command is not limited to these months alone.
The reminder “do not wrong yourselves” applies throughout our lives. The Sacred Months simply sharpen our awareness of accountability, urging us to pause, reflect, and realign our hearts and actions with what pleases Allah. They are an opportunity to reset—spiritually, morally, and socially.
Honouring these months means:
Guarding our speech and behaviour
Avoiding oppression and injustice
Strengthening our relationship with Allah
Extending kindness and support to others
Reverence is not only shown through rituals, but through character.
